Homage to Wolff in Mono #25 - Josh Kumra

These series of mono images are based loosely on the works of Francis Wolff.

Being a jazz lover I inevitably discovered Blue Notes Records and became a fan of not just their musical catalogue, but also of their iconic album sleeves. Their recording roster included jazz greats Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Horace Silver, Art Blakey, Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, Herbie Hancock, Dianne Reeves, Cassandra Wilson, Wayne Shorter, McCoy Tyner, Donald Byrd, Ornette Coleman just to name a few.

Became a bigger fan when I later discovered the works of German born photographer Francis Wolff, cause not only was he responsible for taking some of the great iconic images of any music genre, but he was also a record producer and co-founder of Blue Notes.

Many many moons ago after the HMV jazz section Oxford Street relocated from the ground floor to the basement level, they had a display of Wolff prints for viewing.  And I would travel every other day after work from North London into the West End to gaze for hours at some of the most gorgeous duotone mono prints for hours on end. Those images have served has my inspiration for creating these series of mono images, really hope you enjoy them.

"Seeing, as the saying goes, is believing. In the photography of Wolff there is a deep, shared reverence for the music, captured in a way that makes us all fortunate witnesses to some private and truly historic moments...."  Ashley Kahn

"...While Wolff never considered himself a master photographer, history certainly remembers him as one of the few great jazz photographers......." Anoun
